“I was partway through writing this song about growing up in VT when the recent surge of BLM protests happened and I realized it might be some kind of white nostalgia song, a ‘cliche on the radio’. I saw this video where Janaya Future Khan talked about how a lot of white folks have the lived experience of growing up essentially un-policed, and that was definitely my experience. A lot of freedom to make mistakes under the eyes of loving adults, even ones in uniform. VT and WI both have a lot of rural white counties, and I guess this song is me wrestling with the fact that my own experience growing up was so real to me, but it was not shared by a lot of Black kids who were not given second or even first chances. Let’s vote for a world in which every kid is treated as ‘one of our own’.”
